What is Driver CPC?

Driver Certificate of Professional Competence – Driver CPC is a new law that has been introduced across the EU to maintain high driving standards and improve road safety and is designed to boost driver’s knowledge and skills initially and continuously develop driver knowledge throughout a drivers Vocational Career.

All professional bus, coach and lorry drivers must work towards holding a Driver CPC Driver Qualification Card to drive one of these vehicles for a living.

Once I’ve passed my initial qualification, is that it?

No! Your Initial Driver CPC lasts for 5 years. To renew your Driver Qualification Card you will need to complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years, before the expiry date to continue to drive professionally.

However, if you are gaining a LGV C1 license to become an ambulance technician or paramedic, once you have completed your blue light training you won’t need to undertake Driver CPC Periodic Training or gain a DQC (unless you decide to take up C1 driving as a vocation).

How will it affect me?

If you obtained your UK car license after January 1997, you need to pass Initial Driver CPC tests to get a Driver Qualification Card which you must have to be able to drive professionally and work as a lorry, bus or coach driver on lorries of 3.5 tones and upwards, and/or minibuses with 9 seats or more.

Drivers of minibuses with a ‘not for hire or reward’ (Code 101) license will have to take the initial qualification should they wish to drive professionally.

Drivers with an LGV license who want to gain the PCV License or drivers with a PCV license who want to gain a LGV license (unless they hold C1 already) WILL need to undertake the Initial Driver CPC.

Initial Driver CPC means passing Module 2 Case Study theory test and Module 4 practical safety demonstration test which are on top of the theory tests (multiple choice and hazard perception) and practical driving test.

Once you have passed all tests, you will receive the Driver Qualification Card (DQC) and you will also need to complete 35 hours periodic training over the following five years to keep your Driver CPC qualification.

If you have an LGV license and want to gain a PCV license, or if you have a PCV license and want to gain LGV license (unless you hold C1 already) you will also need the Initial Driver CPC.

We also provide initial Driver CPC training for clients who have passed their test elsewhere (maybe outside the UK)

Beware – Some providers do not offer Initial Driver CPC training. Some don’t even mention you’re going to need a Driver Qualification Card (DQC) before you can start work as a vocational driver or tell you the extra charges involved.

Driver CPC Periodic Training

As you are aware in 2013 every Professional Driver PCV 2013 and LGV 2014 is required to have a Driver Qualification Card (DQC); it is quite simple no card no work.

We can supply you with the required training at a time to suit you. Ideally; we need as many drivers as possible to be available to make it cost effective for us but we are flexible.

Our courses can be arranged to suit your drivers needs for example if you feel your drivers need more training on Drivers Hours we can repeat that course and it will be included in the 35 hours.

The course consists of 5 modules each lasting 7 hours and as stated can be adapted to your driver’s particular needs.

Each course is run by our fully Qualified Registered Instructors. The course is registered with Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

Each driver will receive 7 hours training per module at the end of which they will receive a certificate from us, and the results will be registered with the DVSA.
